In the graphic novels he didn't have any (he was originally in the army - he met Linderman in Vietnam when they were the only two people left alive in a special unit) originally. If he developed them between Vietnam and his death, chances are they're gained through 'the formula'. Either that, or Nathan, Peter and Sylar get all their gifts from Angela.
